Two creative people,
one whimsical drawing at a time.

Since 2008 we’ve built our freelance illustration studio on a foundation of whimsical storytelling, candy colors, and nostalgic hand lettering.

As a husband-and-wife team, we know the value of collaboration and team work, and as freelancers, we value the skills of action and initiation; as such, we thrive in varied team environments, from solo art directors to full-on committees. We take pride in maintaining a style that will fit in a variety of markets but have worked most often in the children’s market, editorial, books, advertising, apps, greeting cards, paper goods, custom commissions, small business branding, and copywriting.

Our story.

We first met in a drawing class in college and hit it off over a fabric study. We continued working side-by-side in art classes through college (sometimes pitted against each other) until 2008, when all at once we got married, graduated, and launched into paper goods and freelance illustration. The economy was terrible at the time—industry veterans of 10+ years were getting laid off—but we were determined to find a way to continue our passion of drawing for a living. We used our own hand-drawn wedding invitations as our first custom listing on Etsy and we began to pick up our first clients from there.

What started out as two people, with two very different drawing styles, slowly transformed into one unique and whimsical style that carries across a wide spectrum of work: from colorful prints and cards in our online shop and retail stores, to illustrations for The Land of Nod and American Greetings. We’re living the dream, and every day is a new adventure to see where This Paper Ship will sail next!
